What Part Does Planning And Goal Setting Play In Study Success?

by Scott Edwards

No great accomplishment has ever been achieved without planning. When Sir Edmund Hillary conquered Mount Everest, he wasn’t out for a stroll and all of a sudden found himself at the summit! To make a change to your life you have to plan to make the change or it won’t happen.

Prior to commencing your training course, take the time to think about your personal goals, and work out a study programme with targets or indicators of success along the way. To help you get started, use the acronym Smart to qualify the goals you plan to achieve. Smart stands for specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and targeted.

Make a personal contract based on the following 5 D’s to immerse yourself in the positive outcome of your studies. This contract should be written down, and signed.

DEFINE what you wish to get out of your soon to be acquired new skill-set, to keep you motivated along the way. Be specific about the material things you’re looking forward to, the kind of home you want, the sort of holidays you’ll take and the type of car you’ll drive.

DESIRE. Explore your emotions for this one, and dig deep to discover why your studies are important. Is it to prove to yourself or others that you are an achiever, and that you deserve better things? Perhaps you want more control in your life, or maybe it’s a personal challenge.

DEDICATION is a measure of how commited you are to a successful end result. Plan your time each week so you know exactly when you’re dedicated to studying. This not only helps you to get into a routine, it’s also an indicator for those around you that you’re engaged in something that’s important to you. They won’t expect you to get involved in different activities when your diary shows a study period if you’ve been consistently sticking to your routine. Setting aside ‘official’ study times helps you to concentrate, and prevents you from thinking about other things that you could be doing. It also frees up your mind to enjoy leisure time outside of study periods.

DETERMINATION - The will to stick to the plan until completion and see it through. This is your contract to ensure that you won’t let yourself down.

Having a plan and targets to work towards gives you a DISCIPLINE that helps you to power through the tough times that will occasionally strike you.

Your contract is a working document designed to assist and strengthen you through the change in your life. Keep it close by, and take time to look at it regularly. Add inspiring thoughts and ideas to it that will keep you on track and spur you on. The more emotionally involved you get with the results of completing your course, the sooner you’ll get through it. Expectation of good things, along with planning and goal-setting, have proven time after time to bring the desired results to fruition.

To Achieve Success In Study, How Important Are Targets And Goals?

by Scott Edwards

Planning for a successful outcome is the basic requirement of any endeavour. Today’s football superstars didn’t get to become multi-millionaires without years of dedication to practice, planning and targets. For any life-changing event to happen, planning and goal-setting are paramount.

DEFINE (what you want out of it) e.g. the exact car, house, number and type of holidays, income level for partner to give up work etc. Be specific or you won’t know when you’ve achieved it. Re-enforce it with photographs and put them up around where you plan to work.

DESIRE. Explore your emotions for this one, and dig deep to discover why your studies are important. Is it to prove to yourself or others that you are an achiever, and that you deserve better things? Perhaps you want more control in your life, or maybe it’s a personal challenge.

Commitment or DEDICATION. Announce to yourself and those close to you that you’re dedicated to your studies by writing up a timetable and sticking with it. However much time you choose to study each week, have it written on a calendar planner that you can cross off once you’ve completed it. Put it in a prominent place so it’s at the forefront of your mind (at least until it becomes a habit). All things that are important get prioritised, so let your friends and family know that this is a priority to you for perhaps ten hours a week for a set number of months. Once your timetable has become established, you’ll take pride in your dedication, and study all the better for it.

A contract illustrates your DETERMINATION to see this thing through. Having a written document about the positive direction of your life makes it harder to bottle out of it.

Having a plan and targets to work towards gives you a DISCIPLINE that helps you to power through the tough times that will occasionally strike you.

Why Is Goal Planning And Targeting Important To Success In Study?

by Scott Edwards

Nothing great ever happens by accident. Successful people from all walks of life don’t just wake up one morning as high achievers! For change to happen, a plan of action has to be made, targets have to be set and a commitment to see it through has to be adopted.

Prior to commencing your training course, take the time to think about your personal goals, and work out a study programme with targets or indicators of success along the way. To help you get started, use the acronym Smart to qualify the goals you plan to achieve. Smart stands for specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and targeted.

Use the following five D’s to help you get emotionally involved with the result of your efforts. Write your five D’s down in a contract to yourself.

DEFINE exactly what you expect to get from your efforts, in terms of possessions, income, lifestyle etc. Make a collage of pictures that reflects these things, and look at them regularly (e.g. before your study sessions). The more specifically you define what you want, the better.

DESIRE (why you’re doing it) e.g. personal challenge, get out from where you are, you owe it to yourself to have a better job, to prove to someone you’ve got what it takes, to take control of your destiny. This needs to be something that stirs an emotion within you.

DEDICATION is a measure of how commited you are to a successful end result. Plan your time each week so you know exactly when you’re dedicated to studying. Your contract is the beginning of your new life. Those who write down their goals in a specific and realistic manner, then work diligently and consistently to achieve them, have proven to be amongst the world’s most successful people. Read your contract every day, and add positive new jottings and pictures to it that will help you when the going gets tough. Plan your work, and then work your plan with commitment. In two years time your life could be unrecognisable to those who know you now.

Courses in PC Support

by Scott Edwards

In today’s high speed society, support workers who have the ability to mend PC’s and networks, plus give daily help to users, are essential in all areas of industry. Our requirement for better qualified personnel is enhanced, as we become vastly more reliant on PC’s in the modern world.

How can we go about making a good decision then? With all this potential, we’ll need to know where to be looking - and what we should be searching for.

An all too common mistake that many potential students make is to concentrate on the course itself, instead of focusing on where they want to get to. Colleges are full of unaware students who chose a course based on what sounded good - rather than what would get them the career they desired. Students often train for a single year but end up doing the job for 20 years. Don’t make the error of choosing what sounds like a very ‘interesting’ program and then spend decades in a job you hate! It’s essential to keep your focus on what it is you’re trying to achieve, and then build your training requirements around that - avoid getting them back-to-front. Stay focused on the end-goal and begin studying for a career that will keep you happy for many years. Before setting out on a particular study programme, you’d be well advised to chat over specific job needs with an industry professional, so as to be sure the learning program covers all that is required.

All programs you’re considering must provide a widely recognised certification at the end - and not some unimportant ‘in-house’ plaque for your wall. Unless your qualification is issued by a company like Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA, then you may discover it will have been a waste of time - as no-one will have heard of it.

We’d hazard a guess that you probably enjoy fairly practical work - a ‘hands-on’ type. If you’re like us, the unfortunate chore of reading reference guides can be just about bared when essential, but it’s not ideal. Consider interactive, multimedia study if books just don’t do it for you. Our ability to remember is increased with an involvement of all our senses - this has been an accepted fact in expert circles for decades now. Start a study-program in which you’ll receive a selection of CD and DVD based materials - you’ll learn by watching video tutorials and demonstrations, with the facility to practice your skills in interactive lab’s. You must see the type of training provided by each company you’re contemplating. Be sure that they contain instructor-led video demonstrations with virtual practice-lab’s. Pick disc based courseware (On CD or DVD) if possible. You’re then protected from internet connection failure and issues with signal quality.

Proper support should never be taken lightly - locate a good company that includes 24×7 access, as anything else will annoy you and definitely hold up your pace and restrict your intake. Try and find training where you can access help at any time of day or night (irrespective of whether it’s the wee hours on Sunday morning!) Ensure you get access directly to professional tutors and not access to a call-in service which takes messages - so you’re waiting for tutors to call you back when it’s convenient for them. World-class organisations offer an internet-based 24×7 facility utilising a variety of support centres across the globe. You will have a simple interface that seamlessly selects the best facility available at any time of day or night: Support when you need it. If you accept anything less than support round-the-clock, you’ll regret it very quickly. You may not need it during the night, but what about weekends, early mornings or even late evenings at some point?

Adding in the cost of exams upfront then including an exam guarantee is a common method with a number of training colleges. But look at the facts: Clearly it isn’t free - you’re still footing the bill for it - it’s just been included in your package price. People who take each progressive exam, funding them one at a time are much better placed to get through first time. They are mindful of what they’ve paid and prepare more appropriately to be ready for the task. Doesn’t it make more sense to hold on to your money and pay for the exam when you take the exam, instead of paying a premium to a training company, and also to sit exams more locally - instead of the remote centre that’s convenient only to the trainer? Paying in advance for examinations (which also includes interest if you’ve taken out a loan) is madness. Resist being talked into filling the training company’s account with additional funds simply to help their cash-flow! There are those who hope that you won’t get to do them all - but they won’t refund the cash. Also, exam guarantees often have very little value. The majority of organisations won’t pay again for an exam until you’ve completely satisfied them that you’re ready this time. On average, exams cost around the 112 pounds mark last year through local VUE or Pro-metric centres throughout the country. So don’t be talked into shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds more for ‘Exam Guarantees’, when common sense dictates that the responsible approach is study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams.

A question; why might we choose qualifications from the commercial sector instead of familiar academic qualifications taught at schools, colleges or universities? With 3 and 4 year academic degree costs climbing ever higher, alongside the industry’s increasing awareness that vendor-based training is often far more commercially relevant, we have seen a great increase in Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe based training programmes that provide key skills to an employee at a far reduced cost both money and time wise. Academic courses, as a example, clog up the training with vast amounts of loosely associated study - with a syllabus that’s far too wide. This prevents a student from learning the core essentials in sufficient depth. Just as the old advertisement said: ‘It does what it says on the tin’. The company just needs to know where they have gaps and then match up the appropriate exam numbers as a requirement. Then they’re assured that a potential employee can do exactly what’s required.

Massive developments are coming via technology over the next few decades - and the industry becomes more ground-breaking every year. It’s a common misapprehension that the increase in technology we’ve been going through is cooling down. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are huge changes to come, and the internet in particular will become an increasingly dominant part of our lives. Should lifestyle be around the top on your goal sheet, then you’ll welcome the news that the regular income of a typical IT worker is much higher than salaries in other market sectors. Experts agree that there’s a great UK-wide search for certified IT specialists. In addition as the industry constantly develops, it is likely this pattern will continue for a good while yet.

Why ‘I Know’ Are The Two Most Destructive Words To Learning.

by Scott Edwards

We all laugh at Little Britain’s wheelchair-bound Andy Pipkin when he constantly retorts ‘Yea - I know’ to just about everything his selflessly dedicated carer Lou says to him. That’s because he clearly doesn’t listen, doesn’t understand, and plainly doesn’t really know at all.

To be open to the learning process, we must be careful not to subconsciously assume that we know all about something, when often our understanding of a subject is quite limited. Two people might both have the same amount of knowledge on a topic, but the one who feels he/she knows least and is open-minded to learning more will ultimately be the better educated one, with a much deeper comprehension.

Mentally assuming ‘I know’ is a directive to our inner consciousness that all is well, and there is nothing more to be learned about a subject. Adopting such an ‘ignorance is bliss’ type attitude is hardly conducive to learning and study, as our depth of understanding will always remain shallow.

Going through lessons just to say we’ve done them will achieve nothing if we’re convinced that we know it all. Mentally, the gate is locked, and so new material will go straight over our heads, as if it wasn’t actually there at all. A closed mind won’t even recognise knowledge when it’s presented.

Some people learn new things every year, whereas others just experience the same thing year after year. To get more out of life (and learning), adopt a child-like, inquisitive attitude. That way you’ll see things that others miss, and add more depth and breadth to your personality.

Going over something several times can really enhance your involvement in the subject. Looking at something again with a fresh pair of eyes and a willingness to find out more can be really enjoyable. Re-watching a DVD of a stand-up comedian proves this point - we rarely get all the meat out of one viewing, and many subtleties are missed the first time around.

Sometimes, reviewing information challenges our current understanding. We then need to dig in further, to test whether we had understood something correctly, or whether we need to modify our original thoughts. Only an open-minded approach will solidify knowledge at this level.

Society has developed over the years because of open-minded people keen to progress the thinking of their age. Those who ‘know everything’ can never improve, and their ‘knowledge’ becomes stagnant. Those who embrace the ideas and wisdom of others become the most valuable people on earth.

Causes Of Female Hair Loss

by Sarah Rowe

There are a number of different reasons for why a woman may find that she starts to lose her hair. Yet although some women do suffer from hair loss, it is not to the same extent that men do. In this article, we look at one reason that is the cause of female hair loss and is the most common.

Yet even though we still think that hair loss is predominantly a male problem, today quite a few women are likely to suffer from some form of serious hair loss. In fact, according to the American Academy of Dermatology around 30 million women in the United States alone are troubled with hair loss of one sort or another.

For quite a few women the reason that they start losing hair is because of their genetics. All women have hormones in their bodies called androgens, but for a few, these can actually interfere with the way that their hair grows normally. The main hormone in this group, which causes such a problem, is testosterone.

For some unknown reason because of a woman’s genetic makeup, there are times when the testosterone hormone in her body comes into contact with an enzyme that makes it convert easily into DHT. When it does this the DHT is able to bind to the receptors deep inside the hair follicles which prevents messages from being able to gain entry and so prevent them from growing as normal.

Generally, this build up of DHT on the hair follicles takes some time so a woman will only see a gradual increase in their hair loss. The build up also causes the hair follicles to shrink and so the pattern for natural hair growth in a person begins to alter. Often as this happens, a woman is likely to notice that they are beginning to suffer from female pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia if you wish to use its medical name.

Yet even though this form of baldness in women is similar to the version that men get there are some slight differences between them. In most cases for women, it will be very difficult to see because it is diffused and often is a thinning of the hair rather than them losing hair and becoming bald. As for men they will start to see the line of hair begin to thin and then recede altogether. The most common place it occurs on women is on the top of their scalps, as for men it happens at the crown, on the temple, or at the back of the head.

As well as this difference in the two types of baldness, the other is that it only occurs in men as they grow older. Whilst for women they can start to suffer from female pattern baldness at any stage in their lives. For some women who get it when they are young it is because they may well be suffering from some other medical condition.

As well as the above, there are other reasons as to why a woman may suffer from hair loss. Certainly, when it comes to deciding what the cause of female hair loss is in a particular woman it may come down to a number of different factors. With Some women, the cause can be from a traumatic event in their lives, whilst for others it could be down to some kind of medical condition or treatment.

A Parent’s Guide To Coping With Adhd Children

by Alvin Toh

Parenting ADHD children can be stressful, frustrating and overwhelming. ADHD children have a shorter attention span than other kids and they often anger easily when they don’t get their way.

It is possible to raise a well rounded child even if they have ADHD by following these 9 important ADHD parenting tips. These are designed to help you support your child.

1. Set down clear rules for your child to follow. These should be consistent. Do not change the rules as this can be very confusing. Make sure both parents use the same rules.

2. Most children, especially those who suffer from ADHD, work well by following set routines. Make sure you tell your children when certain tasks should be done. You may want to restrict the amount of time they spend playing computer games, watching TV or listening to music. By adhering to set routines, your children have their own thinking time.

3. Share the chores. Nobody likes doing chores, but it really does do your child a lot of good. Keep a chart so you can monitor what is being done. Awarding a gold star when a job is completed can make children with ADHD very happy! Make sure you show them how the tasks should be completed.

4. You need to prioritize. Make sure all of the important things get done. If your child doesn’t do something unimportant then don’t get too worked up about it

5. Teach your child how to manage their time. Children with ADHD benefit from learning how to prioritize and manage their time. These children may not understand the concept of time management. For older children you should use a planner or even an electric organizer.

6. Divide the tasks to be more manageable. Large tasks can be very frustrating for ADHD children. If you break the large tasks into smaller chunks, it would be much easier for your child to handle them.

7. Have patience. Parents already know that it takes lots of patience to raise their children with ADHD. To keep your own patience level up try giving tasks when there is plenty of time to complete them and enough time for you to follow up. Try to allow some room for error and always accentuate the positive things your child does.

8. Make sure you improve your communication with your child. You should spend time with them. Allow yourself plenty of time to talk with your child and get to know them. Try to encourage them to communicate as this will serve them well in later life.

9. Set a good example for your child. This will determine how your child grow up. Your child will always look up to you and will strive to be like you.
